ATLANTA — The American Red Cross says an emergency blood shortage will continue into August, and the organization is offering $5 Amazon gift cards to anyone who donates during the month.
The Red Cross announced the shortage earlier in July.
“After issuing an emergency call for blood and platelet donors in early July, the American Red Cross continues to face an emergency blood shortage,” the organization says. “All eligible donors are urged to give now.”
They said they currently have less than a three-day supply of most blood types available, and less than two-day supply of the critical Type O blood.
The Red Cross said it would extend the emergency call for donations through Aug. 29.
The organization offered a number of ways to find a blood drive, including the Red Cross Blood Donor App, going to their website at RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or, if you have one, by asking Amazon’s Alexa, “Alexa, find a blood drive.”
The Red Cross said Amazon made a $1 million donation to help fuel the blood drive.
