Lockdown ends at Fort Eisenhower after fatal shooting kills 1 in on-post housing

Officials confirmed that the shooter was apprehended and described the incident as isolated.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A lockdown at Fort Eisenhower ended Saturday morning after a fatal shooting in on-post housing claimed the life of one individual.

Officials confirmed that the shooter was apprehended and described the incident as isolated. The victim’s identity has not been released, as officials are waiting to notify the family. 

The lockdown, initiated earlier in the morning, was lifted at approximately 9:45 a.m. when the post issued an all-clear and reopened its gates. Officials emphasized their commitment to supporting the victim’s family and assisting anyone affected by the tragedy.

"The safety of our residents and personnel remains our primary concern," the post said in part. 

Officials have not released any other information about the shooting.

Fort Eisenhower posted another update on its Facebook page around 4 p.m.:

"Fort Eisenhower suffered a tragedy this morning that warranted closing the post for approximately two hours.

The deceased will not be publicly identified until the family is notified and has had time to process the information.

A suspect is now in custody and there is no threat to our community.

Our focus at this time is providing support to the victim’s family and assistance to anyone impacted by this tragedy. The safety and wellbeing of our residents – our Soldiers and Families - remains a top priority. 

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, in cooperation with state and federal partners, is leading the investigation.  No further details will be posted.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding."
