DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — We now know what was happening before a little girl died in a creek in DeKalb County.
It happened on Jan. 31 at Pole Bridge Creek near Farrington Drive. A 6-year-old girl, who has now been identified as Damaria Hooten of Lithonia, drowned after falling into the creek while playing with friends, according to the incident report.
Her older brother told police Hooten fell into the creek after a branch she was holding onto broke. He said that he immediately went to get help from neighbors who called 911.
DeKalb fire crews found the victim roughly an hour after she fell into the water.
They quickly began CPR and rushed her to Egleston Children's Hospital. Hours later the fire department confirmed she had died.
