LEXINGTON, S.C. -- A South Carolina high school football player died hours after after collapsing on the field during practice.
Social media accounts tied to River Bluff High School's athletics department announced late Wednesday night that the student athlete had died.
Lexington school district officials said around 7 p.m. that the 14-year-old sophomore dropped to the ground during drills. Two athletic trainers and a coach immediately began CPR and started using a defibrillator on the boy. Paramedics then transported the student to a local hospital.
At the hospital, about 15 to 20 players and coaches came to the emergency room to check up on the student-athlete.
The name of the athlete has not yet been released to the public.
A representative for the school district said practice began around 5 p.m. and lasted about 2 hours and 15 minutes. Players took water breaks every 15 to 20 minutes, the district added, and water hoses and coolers were available at all times.
The district spokesperson added that trainers on the site monitor athletes and make sure they take water breaks.
