SEATTLE -- The audience clearly wasn't expecting a typical night at the symphony. But the unbridled performance from a Seattle woman caught many by surprise.
Shawn Bounds, a Sir Mix-a-Lot fan for more than 20 years, bought tickets with a friend to see him perform at Benaroya Hall.
"I could not wrap my brain around Seattle Symphony and Sir Mix-a-Lot," said 38-year-old Bounds. "I was intrigued. I knew it would be incredible. Incredible."
Just before his signature song, Sir Mix-A-Lot did what any sir would do, ask a lady to dance. He invited "a couple" of women up on stage. But be careful what you wish for. More than two dozen women in the audience answered the call, including Bounds.
"This is 20 years in the making," she said. "I have planned that out my whole life. Did I think it would ever happen? No way."
Talk about seizing the moment. If you look at the YouTube video, Bounds can been seen bouncing in the black dress. What happened next would go viral. Sir Mix-a-Lot launches in the chorus and Bounds, with sheer uninhibited enthusiasm and some killer dance moves, manages to upstage everyone on the stage.
"I've been doing this my whole life. You should see wedding videos. You should see birthday parties. So my friends and family that know me, this is no surprise whatsoever," she said, laughing.
The Seattle Symphony was videotaping the performance, with Bounds shaking her posterior for posterity, and uploaded it to YouTube. The clip has had more than a million hits since the Friday night concert.
"I think a thousand of those hits are myself, looking at myself, because I don't really know what i look like, and so to see that was hilarious," said Bounds.
"She was incredible," said Sir Mix-a-Lot. "She was so good, [many fans] thought she was a fake."
The director of sales for a well-known hotel chain isn't shying away from her new found fame. After her gutsy performance, we're not surprised.
"When opportunity comes knocking you better answer that door," she said.
