Smith's Olde Bar enters lease lawsuit to stay open

ATLANTA -- Smith's Old Bar is a musical mainstay in Atlanta that was slapped with an eviction notice on April 23.

Owner Dan Nolan says a lot of customers, bands and even employees assume the venue is finished since the news broke that the building will go up for sale.

However Nolan believes this fight is far from owner, and he's going to court over a lease dispute to preserve the club.

He'll keep the doors open at Smith's Olde Bar at least until the court resolves the case. It's a way to stay open short term and possibly buy some time for the long term.

Nolan's plan to stay open indefinitely hinges on two things: First, that this lawsuit will keep the club open until a potential buyer is named. Secondly, he's hopeful that the potential buyer will see value in preserving the twenty-three year old venue.

"We're just trying to keep Smith's Old Bar open, productive and being an asset to the city of Atlanta. If we go down fighting I'm ok with that. But I don't think we are going down. Smith's is going to be here to stay I think," he said.

The owner of this building passed away earlier this year. The property will be placed up for sale later this month, which means a new buyer could be named within the next few weeks.
