'They can continue their games': Fulton County DA Fani Willis shares thoughts on Senate committee hearing

This comes after a hearing was held with testimony from the attorney who initially filed a motion to disqualify her from the 2020 election RICO case.

ATLANTA — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis plans to run for reelection amid ongoing calls to disqualify her from the election interference case against former President Donald Trump.

Willis submitted paperwork to qualify for the race at the Georgia State Capitol on Wednesday afternoon.

"It means everything. I didn't think it would be as exciting, but it turns out the second time is still a charm," she said excitedly after qualifying. "I've said it before, being the Fulton County District Attorney is the greatest honor of my entire life."

This comes after the Georgia Senate Special Committee on Investigations held a hearing earlier in the day with testimony from Ashleigh Merchant, the attorney who initially filed a motion to disqualify the district attorney from the 2020 election RICO case.

"The committee’s goal is to thoroughly investigate the allegations of misconduct by the district attorney for Fulton County, Fani Willis, relating to potential conflicts of interest and misuse of public funds, to enact new or amend existing laws and/or change state appropriations to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system," the state Senate's website said.

Willis spoke to reporters about Wednesday's hearing.

"I think it's all just a political quest. I think that people are angry because I'm going to do the right thing," she said. "They can continue their games, and I'm going to continue the work of the people."

In the meantime, the judge overseeing the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump and his co-defendants is expected to rule within the next two weeks on whether to remove Willis from the case over a romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.  Judge Scott McAfee heard testimony on multiple days from several people -- including Wade and Willis.

When asked if she was feeling confident about the judge's upcoming decision on whether to disqualify her from the election interference case, Willis declined to comment.
