Legal expert weighs in on Mark Meadows' potentially taking Georgia election case to Supreme Court

One of Meadows' new attorneys has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court dozens of times.

ATLANTA — Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has added three new attorneys to his legal team.

It's the most recent move in the Fulton County election case.

Criminal defense lawyer Meg Strickler said this is a sign Meadows could take this to the U.S. Supreme Court, though there's no official appeal just yet.

One of the new editions is Paul Clement.

"If I was in Meadows' case, I'd be going for him, too," Strickler said. "You want to get somebody who's confident and understands the environment."

The other attorneys are Erin Murphy and Zachary Lustbader.

Clement is a big-shot attorney who's been before the Supreme Court dozens of times. However, Strickler said she doesn't see it helping Meadows' success.

"No, I don't think so at all," Strickler said. "You know, you're going to throw the best legal brains at it, but ultimately, what was this having to do with his official duties?"

Meadows has been appealing his alleged involvement in the overturning of the 2020 election. Strickler believes Clement will argue if Meadows was acting in his role as a federal officer.

"The next step is the Supreme Court will say, 'Yeah, we're going to grant speech or you listen to you,' or 'No, we don't care,'" Strickler said.

Strickler said this will take time as it goes through the courts. Fulton County Superior Court and the U.S. 11th Circuit of Appeals have ruled against Meadows, so far.

Some argue the reason Meadows and his team are pushing to move this forward is that the federal court is a more familiar environment. However, in Strickler's experience, she said Fulton County is less challenging than the federal court when it comes to facing harsh criminal charges.

"Get local lawyers who know Fani Willis and know Fulton County and understand the ins and outs," Strickler said.

Others argue that Meadows may have a chance at a better jury pool, arguing Fulton County is more Democratic-leaning—which could hurt Meadows' chances of success. Strickler begs to differ as it comes down to facing the facts of election fraud.

"You got charges pending for RICO in violation of your office," Strickler said. "And you can skin a cat many different ways, but ultimately, we're still in the same place."

Meadows' attorneys have also asked the 11th Circuit to rehear his appeal. Instead of a three-judge panel, his team is hoping the entire court will hear it.
