ATLANTA — Georgia Congressman Mike Collins is demanding answers as postal delays continue to impact residents across Metro Atlanta, expressing frustration over the lack of progress in resolving the issue.
Collins said that, like many constituents, he has been experiencing difficulties obtaining information from the United States Postal Service (USPS) regarding the ongoing delays.
"We've called for the postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, to come over to my office," Collins said. "Unfortunately, he's out of the office until April, so we're trying to set up a phone call.
Joined by Representative Rich McCormick, Collins said the widespread nature of the problem extends beyond his own district.
"We are still hearing from constituents," Collins said.
The root of the issue appears to stem from the consolidation of processing services at the Palmetto facility, which began in early March. Despite numerous complaints from the public, Collins expressed frustration at not being able to inspect the facility personally.
"We haven't been able to go in the Palmetto facility yet," he said.
Beyond inconveniences with mail delivery, concerns are escalating as the May primary Election approaches. McCormick underscored the importance of resolving the postal delays before voters encounter obstacles in receiving and submitting their absentee ballots.
"If you can't trust them with votes, who can you trust?" McCormick asked.
11Alive reached out to the Postal Service for clarification on when a potential meeting between the postmaster general and Congressman Collins might occur and has not heard back.
