Lawmakers get look inside troubled Palmetto USPS facility | What they said about conditions

Lawmakers said they feel a lack of communication is behind many of the issues.

ATLANTA — A group of Georgia politicians toured the troubled USPS facility in Palmetto on Monday.

11Alive has been reporting on the facility for months, and it has been linked to massive mail issues for people across the state.

According to USPS service data, the Palmetto facility performed at a 60.55% on-time rate so far in May, with a target goal of 92.5%. 

Representative Mike Collins, along with three other lawmakers, toured the facility just a week and a half after Senator Jon Ossoff himself took a look.

Following Ossoff's visit, he blamed the issues on poor management, which Collins also seemed to agree with on Monday.

The lawmakers also stated they feel a lack of communication is also responsible for creating issues.

However, Collins stated that he hopes things will get under control and that mail service will be back to normal in the next six to eight weeks.

"This facility handles both packages and mail... When I take a look at things from a small business perspective, I always go in with what the problem is, what the solution is, and how we ensure this doesn't happen again," he added.

Collins further stated that the group was not allowed to take photos while touring the facility. However, when asked whether they noticed anything they would describe as concerning, they said it was actually the opposite.

If anything, the lawmakers said they were very excited to see that officials inside are using a metric system to track the improvement.

The Atlanta Regional Processing & Distribution Center in Palmetto opened on Feb. 24, consolidating Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and Duluth area processing and distribution centers, each being repurposed as local processing centers. Following Richmond, Virginia, Atlanta was one of the first regional areas to see major network changes.
