Ossoff meets with postmaster general to continue 'relentless pressure' for fix on mail delays

Recent data supplied by the senator show improvements in on-time deliveries, but overall still lagging behind where system performance was a year ago.

ATLANTA — With metro Atlanta and north Georgia mail delivery performance still lagging -- including recent data showing the state was the worst in the country for certain deliveries in the most recent fiscal quarter -- Sen. Jon Ossoff said Thursday he met with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to be "maximally responsive" in resolving the mail delays.

In a release, Ossoff said he met in Washington with the postmaster general, who shared the latest USPS on-time delivery statistics.

The data show there has been substantial improvement since performance nosedived earlier this year following the opening of a new, consolidated regional processing and distribution center in Palmetto -- part of the USPS "Delivering for America" system modernization drive.

But while the first class on-time delivery rate has rebounded from a low of roughly 36% in March, in the data provided Thursday by Sen. Ossoff that rate still lags behind where it was a year. Last year, the on-time delivery rate largely stayed about 90% throughout the first six months of the year. The most recent datapoint for mid-June 2024 showed the on-time delivery rate just over 83%.

In a statement, Ossoff said he would continue to be "focused on applying maximum pressure on USPS leadership and conducting vigorous oversight of the USPS to resolve challenges" still afflicting the system in metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

“For months I have sustained relentless pressure on USPS management to fully resolve disastrous performance failures impacting my constituents in Georgia," Ossoff said. "I’m still hearing from Georgia families and businesses about the difficulty they continue to face sending and receiving their mail, which is why I met today with Postmaster General DeJoy to again reiterate the need for further improvements and greater transparency. I will not rest until my constituents are well and fully served by the U.S. Postal Service."
