24 people killed in crashes, 725 people arrested for DUIs during holiday period in Georgia

The Georgia Department of Public Safety released its final numbers for several key categories on holiday travel across the state.

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Public Safety released its final numbers for several statistics during the state's holiday travel period that just wrapped up.

On Georgia roads from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2, there were 24 people killed from crashes across the state. Information from officials revealed that 15 of the deaths happened during Christmas travel from Dec. 22 to Dec. 26 and that nine people were killed during the New Year's travel period lasting from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2.

Of the traffic fatalities across both travel periods, eight people were killed in metro Atlanta, data revealed. The other deaths were as follows: Paulding County (2), Cherokee County (1), Newnan (1), Grovetown, Columbia County, Newton County (5), Dublin (1), Colquitt, Albany (2), Hinesville, Waycross (2), Statesboro (1) and Brunswick (1).

The other statistics were divided into seven categories and split among the Christmas holiday period and New Year's holiday period. Here's what was discovered:

Christmas holiday period

  • Traffic stops: 15,717
  • DUI: 312
  • Seatbelt: 687
  • Speeding: 4,494
  • Distracted driving: 381
  • Citations: 8,232
  • Warnings: 10,156

New Year's holiday period

  • Traffic stops: 16,967
  • DUI: 413
  • Seatbelt: 762
  • Speeding: 5,144
  • Distracted driving: 468
  • Citations: 9,295
  • Warnings: 10,240

Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated a total of 894 traffic crashes across the state during the holiday period that resulted in 488 injuries across both holiday periods, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety's data.

A total of 14 people died in traffic accidents during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period in Georgia.
