SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. — A 13-year-old girl reported missing in south Georgia over the weekend was found dead in a pond, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

The sheriff's office had posted a missing notice for Letia Greene, who had last been seen around 3 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities said they had found her bike about a half-mile from her home.

In an update, Sheriff Eric D. Bryant's office posted on Facebook to "unfortunately announce that the child was found deceased in a pond."

The circumstances behind the teen's death remain unclear but the sheriff's office said "there is currently no apparent signs of foul play" with an investigation ongoing.

"The office is working with the Coroner's Office to determine cause of death. The investigation is still active. If anyone that has information and wants to come forward, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 229-924-4094," the sheriff's office said.

A range of law enforcement agencies and volunteers assisted in the search, the post said.

"The Sheriff's Office is now asking that the community help console the family and the Sumter County Intermediate School family in this time of grief," it added.
