CHATTOOGA COUNTY, Ga. — A family from out of town visiting Sloppy Floyd State Park in Chattooga County is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old boy who drowned.
The Chattooga County Sheriff's Office and other agencies responded to the area around 3 p.m. Saturday after they received a report about a possible drowning.
The teen, the sheriff's office said, was camping in the area with family when he decided to go fishing.
"He was fishing in an area that had a steep bank. It appears that he may have had a medical episode and fell into the water," Sheriff Mark A. Schrader said in a news release.
A family walking a trail saw him in the water. Unfortunately, deputies said, the 16-year-old had been in the water too long.
"Please be in prayer for this family as their planned weekend turned tragic," the sheriff said.
The name of the teen was not released.
