Thousands gather at Stone Mountain Park for Easter Sunrise Service

The tradition continued this Sunday for the 75th time.

Every Easter, people come together at Stone Mountain Park for a Sunrise Service.

The tradition continued this Sunday for the 75th time.

When the event first started in 1944, a member of Stone Mountain First United Methodist Church suggested that the church's youth group climb to the top of Stone Mountain on Easter morning to watch the sunrise.

Stone Mountain Sunrise Association produces the event where visitors watch the sunrise over Atlanta and listen to uplifting messages from at either the top or the base of Stone Mountain.

Singer Montell Jordan was one of the speakers.

The service started at 7 a.m., but some got there as early as 3 a.m.

Although the tradition dates back to the 1940s, some were excited to attend the event for the fist time.

"We came out here to be a part of this celebration of Jesus Christ being raised from the dead, Charles Rachal said.

"We just wanted to skip tradition," Rachal added. "You know how you do the traditional thing every year...and I know that this is a tradition for many people here, but it has not been one for us."

When the service ended, some stayed behind to enjoy the attractions in the park.
