Video game released advocating sexual violence

With less oversight than the movie or TV industry, sexually violent content is expanding in the gaming industry, according to critics. Some say it's easily accessible to children.

ATLANTA — A video game that focuses on sexual assault against women is sparking controversy.

11Alive News is not going publicize where find the game, or even the name of it, because it’s disturbing.

The website that hosts the game stated it has set safety controls so kids can't download it, but some people say they've easily gotten around those controls.

"You can still access the game within two clicks," said Haley Halverson, vice president with the National Center on Sexual Exploitation.

The real problems lies in regulation. Gaming doesn't have the same level of oversight against disturbing content as movies, television or even cable.

“Video games might have different ratings such as MA for mature audiences,” Halverson said. “There really are not clear enough restrictions on this kind of content particularly on this one major website and often we’re seeing filters even based on the ratings for games, are not effective."

For now the game is ‘under review’ by the gaming platform but it’s still available to play and download.

“This particular website has 35 million users under the age of 18. I would equate it to the Walmart of online video game stores,” said Halverson.

Halverson said she is not aware of any movements to push for more regulation of the gaming industry but believes there should be.

“(The website where you can find this game) used to have 700 games that were tagged for nudity and sexual content,” Halverson said. “Now they have over 2,000.”
