ATHENS, Ga. -- With a deal reportedly set to make Kirby Smart the next head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, here's what you should know about the 39-year-old: 

Age: 39 (born December 23, 1975)

Hometown: Bainbridge, Ga. 

High school: Bainbridge HIgh School

Education:

  • University of Georgia graduated 1999 with a degree in finance
  • attained a master's degree from Florida State in 2003

Personal: 

  • Married to the former Mary Beth Lycett of McDonough, Ga. Three children: Twins Weston and Julia, son Andrew

Degree: Finance

While at Georgia, Smart was: 

  • a four-year letterman at defensive back
  • First team all-SEC as a senior
  • Had 13 interceptions as a Bulldog
  • Led the team with six interceptions in 1997 and five in 1998
  • Four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll
  • Began his coaching career as administrative assistant at Georgia in 1999.

At Valdosta State (2000 - 2001:

  •  Served as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 2001, and defensive backs coach in 2000

At Florida State (2002 - 2003)

  • Served as graduate assistant under Bobby Bowden and Mickey Andrew

At LSU (2004)

  • Served as defensive backs coach under Nick Saban
  • Tutored two future NFL picks: Corey Webster and Travis Daniels
  • Tigers allowed 157.2 passing yards per game (2nd in SEC, 5th nationally)

At Georgia (2005):

  • Served as running back coach
  • Bulldogs averaged 162.2 yards per game (3rd in SEC)

Miami Dolphins (2006)

  • Served as safeties coach under Nick Saban

At Alabama (2007 - present):

  • As defensive coordinator, Smart's Crimson Tide finished third in total defense in 2008, 7th in scoring defense
  • Alabama captured national titles in 2009, 2011, 2012
  • In 2010, Alabama led the SEC and ranked third nationally in scoring defense, and 5th nationally in total defense
  • 2011 team led nation in all five major categories including total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, passing defense, and pass efficiency defense
  • In 2012, Alabama led nation in total defense, scoring defense, rush defense
  • In 2013, Alabama was fourth in scoring defense, fifth in total defense, seventh in rushing defense and 11th in pass defense.
  • Smart was 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year
  • 2009 Broyles Award winner (top assistant coach)
