ATLANTA – The food you’re feeding your dog might make your pet sick.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating elevated levels of vitamin D in several brands of dry dog food, an issue that can lead to kidney failure and death.
“Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but very high amounts can cause serious health problems,” the F.D.A. says on its website.
11Alive’s Why Guy looked into the issues behind a recall of eleven brands of dog food and the dangers posed by too much vitamin D.
The proper amount of vitamin D can help strengthen the teeth and bones of your animal.
In excessive amounts, vitamin D will cause the tissue around a dog’s kidney to harden, leading to kidney failure and possible death.
Veterinarians say symptoms that your pet may have elevated vitamin D levels are lethargy, vomiting, and constipation.
After hearing complaints from pet owners, the F.D.A. laboratory discovered the elevated vitamin levels in several foods leading manufacturers to issue recalls.
“One of the firms reported to the FDA that it was recalling dry pet food due to potentially toxic levels of vitamin D,” says the F.D.A.’s website. “Many other brands with a common contract manufacturer have also been recalled. The FDA is working with the contract manufacturer to provide a comprehensive list of affected brands.”
FDA scientists continue to do their work and say more recalls may be coming.
