CLAY COUNTY, N.C. — A woman accused of shooting a man in the chest in Georgia has been caught just over the state line after a months-long search involving several agencies.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Crystal LeAnn Carter was found in Clay County, North Carolina on Tuesday and is awaiting extradition back to Georgia stemming from the shooting, which happened on Sept 8, 2018 near Hiawassee, Georgia.

Carter was wanted for aggravated assault in the shooting of William Craig Henderson. Authorities believe Carter dropped him off at the Chatuge Regional Hospital with a bullet to the chest before she took off in his Chevrolet Tahoe.

That SUV was later found abandoned at a Marathon gas station on Highway 75 later in the night. Sheriff's detectives at the time said Carter left the station in her own red Ford pickup truck that was later found at a home in Clay County, North Carolina - but Carter was missing.

It would be one county over from Hiawassee - Union County - where a warrant for aggravated assault would be taken out by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Sept. 11, 2018.

The GBI and multiple agencies in Georgia and North Carolina searched for Carter in the months that followed before her April 16 capture.
