ATLANTA — If you're planning to look up at the sun today during the solar eclipse, remember that you absolutely need to be wearing proper eclipse glasses.
11Alive's Erica Murphy spoke to eye doctors over the weekend who noted even a few seconds of unprotected staring at the sun can cause irreparable damage.
Hopefully you've already secured eclipse glasses if you're planning to look up today, but if not there are some businesses that have been offering them and may still work as last-minute options:
Note that this list is not exhaustive. Other stores may have glasses available.
- Warby Parker: The eyeglass retailer has been giving them away since April 1 while supplies last, so chances are they may already be out. But there are three Warby Parker locations you can check in Atlanta at Ponce City Market (650 North Ave. NE), Buckhead (274 Buckhead Ave. NE) and the Westside Provisions development (1198 Howell Mill Rd.).
- Jeni's Ice Cream: One of Atlanta's favorite ice cream shops has been offering four pairs of glasses with a purchase of one of four eclipse-themed flavors. There are several Jeni's locations around Atlanta that you can see here.
- MyEyeDr.: This business has been offering one pair per person while supplies last. There are seven locations around Atlanta you can see here.
- Public libraries: Some libraries around metro Atlanta are participating in the Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL) program which has made glasses available. You can check this map for participating libraries (best advice is to also call your library and see if they have any you can get).
- Sonic: The burger chain has made glasses specifically available today though they caution to "please note that the availability of free glasses may vary from one Sonic restaurant to another." There are Sonics in Atlanta at 1463 Moreland Ave. SE and 1425 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd.
