Former UGA football player dies following severe injuries from car crash

ALBANY, Ga. — A former University of Georgia football player has died following a car crash in Florida on Tuesday.

An obituary posted to Mathews Funeral Home stated that 21-year-old Gleaton Jones died on Friday. 

According to University of Georgia newspaper The Red & Black, Jones was seriously injured and suffered brain trauma following a car wreck during a hunting trip on St. George Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida. He underwent surgery to receive swelling but ultimately died on Friday.

Jones was a standout at his high school in Albany, Georgia, Deerfield-Windsor School. There, Jones earned All-State, All-Region and All-Albany honors, according to his UGA player profile. He joined UGA's football team as a freshman walk-on in the Bulldogs' 2021 national championship run.

The outpouring of love and support was seen across social media on Friday, with Barstool UGA's X account posting the following message:

Messages of support are also pouring in on the obituary for Jones, with many remembering him for the person he was, with some posting pictures of Jones in remembrance.

His UGA player profile also said that he played basketball and ran track in high school, where he was also honored for his academic achievements, with Presidential Honors in all four years.
