Georgia WR Colbie Young suspended following arrest on unborn child, battery charges

Colbie Young was arrested early Tuesday morning by Athens Clarke County police.

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia coach Kirby Smart placed wide receiver Colbie Young on indefinite suspension on Wednesday, one day after Young's arrest following an altercation with a woman.

Young was arrested Tuesday on two charges of battery and one charge of assault on an unborn child following the altercation with a 20-year-old woman who described herself to Athens-Clarke County Police as Young's ex-girlfriend.

“I got to speak to him this morning, you know, and he’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved,” Smart said on the weekly Southeastern Conference coaches conference call.

“We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it," he said, "but had a good meeting with him this morning, and we’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents. And it’s very unfortunate.”

Smart said he wants players “to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field. And you know, this is obviously a really tough situation.”

According to a police report from Athens-Clarke County, Young was visited by an ex-girlfriend and got into a heated argument that eventually turned physical.

The young woman claimed that throughout the argument, Young grabbed her arm and physically pulled her out of his room and later "squeezed her torso and abdomen very hard."

The officer who responded mentioned that she had a "bruise and discoloration on the bottom right side of her chest where it meets the abdomen." The office did not note any injuries to her home.

While the young woman declined to be transported by EMS, police said she did agree to seek medical attention and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police report notes that Young denied ever grabbing her. When asked how she received her injuries, he said it wasn't from him, according to police.

Young was eventually transported to the Clarke County Jail with a bond set at $2,500, jail records show.

In a text to UGASports, Steven Drummond, the school's executive athletic director for Communication Strategiessaid, "This is a pending legal matter. We will have no further comment at this time."

Smart dismissed wide receiver Rara Thomas from the team before the season after Thomas was charged with cruelty to children and battery. It was the second arrest in two years for Thomas, a transfer from Mississippi State.

Georgia players have been involved in at least two dozen driving-related violations such as DUI, reckless driving or speeding, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution has reported. On Sept. 12, cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested on a reckless driving charge after police said he was driving 106 mph.

Smart has acknowledged struggling to get his players to drive safely — an issue that took on heightened importance since a crash that killed a player and a recruiting staffer in January 2023, shortly after the team celebrated its second straight national championship. Offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy were killed in the car crash on Jan. 15, 2023, just days after the Bulldogs won the national title game.
