First all-black golf team to win state championship in Georgia honored by Atlanta City Council

Congratulations to Drew Charter School!

The Drew Charter School golf team is being honored for their accomplishments, finishing their historic season on top in the state.

The Atlanta City Council posted a photo of the team on Facebook, Monday, saying District 5 Councilwoman Natalyn Mosby Archibong honored the team for winning the 2019 Georgia High School Association Class A State Golf Championship.

But the team did more than just win the state title, they made history.

"In winning the state title, the team rewrote the history books in Georgia by becoming the first all African-American team to win a state golf title. Congrats Eagles," the post reads.

In a tweet, the school said they were presented a proclamation at the meeting.

Last month, 11Alive got the chance to catch up with some of the golf players before they headed to Florida to play in the 2019 High School Golf National Invitational.

"At the beginning, I didn't really have the belief in us, but as a team we started to grow a lot," freshman Miles Richardson said.
