ATLANTA – Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, UGA and Auburn will battle it out to win, arguably, America's best football conference.
It's a shot at the college football playoffs, and an opportunity to end up back here in Atlanta a month later, for the National Championship game on Jan. 8.
UGA's hope will rest on a Georgia kid, Jake Fromm, from Warner Robins.
The freshman quarterback was thrust into the starting spot when Jacob Eason went down earlier this season. The 6'2", 225-pound player has been in the spotlight since, but freshmen players aren't allowed to talk to the media. So we don't really know how the season has been like for him. But who better to tell us than Fromm's mom.
11Alive got a closer look at the freshman star as he prepares for the biggest game of his life.
On what this experience has been like:
Lee Fromm: He's in heaven right now. There's no other way to describe it. I mean, he is living the life right now... He has always wanted to play football at Georgia, and he’s lived his dream. So, from here on, it’s yet to be told. But he lived his dream.
On what her son is like:
LF: "He has a very strong personality. Strong when it needs to be, and quiet a lot of times.
This isn't about him, and he likes his receivers to get the big kudos and, you know, for him, he'll just 'I didn't do anything.' And that's pretty much what he says after every game. I tell him how proud I am of him, and he goes, 'I didn't do nothing. I didn't go catch that ball.'"
On what's important to Jake:
LF: "One thing he does do before he gets out of bed is read his Bible. That's what he does every morning. One of his best friends is his granddad. His family is very important to him. He loves his dog, he loves his family. He comes home as much as he can to see us."
On his close relationship to her:
LF: "During the seasons, I would look at – say Jake was playing Kentucky. I would go to Kentucky and look at some of their defensive film. So every Wednesday, I would call Jake and let him know, 'I know Cheney and Coach Smart have their version of what you need to do, but here's the momma version.'
On her game-day nerves:
LF: "Oh, I'm a basket case. He steps back to throw – oh, I lose my breath. He gets sacked by two, I lose my breath."
But don't expect Jake to get nervous, Lee said, she says he's never once gotten nervous about a game. She doesn't expect that to change on Saturday.
