ATLANTA – Delta Airlines has apologized to local Olympian Elena Meyers Taylor after she was asked to change seats as her plane was moving across the tarmac.
The bobsledding silver medalist tweeted over the weekend she paid extra to sit next to her husband on a Delta flight back to Atlanta.
She tweeted that she was horribly embarrassed to be asked to move and felt by getting up, it looked like she had done something wrong.
A Delta spokesperson told 11Alive that the issue stemmed from the brace Elana was wearing on her leg. She was injured during the 2018 Winter Olympics and required surgery after returning to the United States.
Elana told 11Alive she was wearing a walking boot from her Achilles injury. She said they boarded the plane, sat down, did the safety checks, asked if they were able to assist and said everything seemed good.
Delta said they asked the Olympian to move because she was sitting in an exit row seat and people who sit there have to agree to assist other passengers during an emergency. Elana said no one said anything about her walking boot the entire time and she told 11Alive she didn’t have a problem assisting in the event of an emergency.
A Delta spokesperson said the airline refunded her money and gave her Delta Sky Miles. He said, "Delta apologizes for the inconvenience and confusion thus caused this customer".
