ATLANTA — One of golf's most unique events is taking center stage this weekend at one of Atlanta's most-cherished golf courses.
It's the World Long Drive Championship - if you're a fan of big swings and "hitting bombs," this is your event.
It's the first time the event will be in Atlanta. The No. 12 ranked long drive competitor, Brandon Flynn of Alpharetta, spoke to 11Alive's Crash Clark about his excitement that the event is coming to his hometown.
"My grandfather would take me out every single weekend," he said. "Love it, it's a sport where you're competing against yourself. And I just loved everything about it."
And there is so much more to these competitors than just bombing long drives. As an Air Force veteran, Brandon reaches out to local vets to give a few tips on the game and, of course, how to get a few extra yards on those tee shots.
"What were trying to do is were trying to create as much speed as possible," he explained. "So we're taking those normal things where we're trying to be stable and we're exaggerating. So we're moving off of the ball, we're creating momentum. We're getting wider so that we create more space, so that the club can travel further, and we can go faster."
In 1932, Bobby Jones Golf Course was the first public golf course in Atlanta. But, after years of neglect it no longer honored the most iconic name in the game. In steps, the Bobby Jones Foundation have transformed these hollowed grounds into a revolutionary golf course featuring multiple tees and greens and a state-of-the-art practice facility with a specific focus on juniors and adaptive golf.
"And that's what we're here to do. Kind of provide some education on how the average golfer can gain a few yards," Flynn said.
Even if you are an average golfer, the World Long Drive Championship is next level entertainment.
