COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — On Wednesday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled a statue dedicated to Hank Aaron, marking the 50th anniversary of his breaking baseball's most cherished record.
The statue was installed on the first floor of the Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The bronze statue, created by renowned sculptor Will Behrends, celebrates Aaron's legendary career and philanthropic contributions.
“Hank Aaron's legacy extends beyond his baseball achievements,” said Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark. “His support of youth empowerment and his pioneering work as an executive have opened doors of opportunity for millions. We are privileged to preserve his collection in Cooperstown, and this statue will stand as a tribute to an American hero.”
Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982, Aaron's record-breaking career included surpassing Babe Ruth's home run record on April 8, 1974. Aaron still holds records for most career RBIs and total bases.
The new statue was made possible by a gift from Hall of Fame supporters Jane and Bob Crotty' and guidance from Aaron’s widow, Billye, who attended the unveiling with several other family members.
It will debut during the Hall of Fame Classic celebration on Memorial Day Weekend, coinciding with a legends game at Cooperstown’s Doubleday Field.
