Georgia high school athletics governing board votes today on reclassification appeals

Several schools were appealing to go down a level after being reorganized into the "top" Class 6A level for 2024-25 and 2025-26.

ATLANTA — The Georgia High School Association is meeting throughout Thursday to hear appeals on its newly-released reclassification levels that are to take effect for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

Several schools are appealing their classification to the "top" 6A level in state high school athletics (6A is the old 7A, which is being eliminated, along with new schools from the current "second level" of 6A) for a move "down" to 5A.

Those include metro Atlanta schools Rockdale County, Central Gwinnett, Heritage-Conyers, Kennesaw Mountain, Arabia Mountain, Douglas County, Newnan, Shiloh, Chapel Hill and Alexander.

According to an agenda for Thursday's meeting, a vote was to be held on the schools appealing their 6A classification at 11:30 a.m. 11Alive reached out for the results of those votes, with GHSA saying they will be available online later in the day.

Other schools at lower levels also seeking to drop further were to have their appeals heard throughout the afternoon. There were 19 schools appealing to "play up" that were all approved, though none were seeking to move to the highest 6A or 5A levels.
