LOUISVILLE, Georgia — An east Georgia community is mourning the loss of a high school player who passed away Thursday evening in what was described as a "tragic accident."

Thomas Jefferson Academy, a high school located about 45 miles southwest of Augusta, posted about the loss of junior Carter Gay, who was one of its students.

The circumstances surrounding Gay's death were not immediately released.

"Carter was a true gentleman who was kind and respectful to all and embraced life to the fullest.  He was a great outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and listening to country music with his friends," the school said in a post on social media.

Gay was also a member of the shotgun team, according to Thomas Jefferson Academy.

"His presence will be greatly missed, and his spirit will remain in us all," the school said online.
