KENNESAW, Ga. — Kennesaw State University's Head Football Coach Brian Bohannon is stepping down after 10 seasons, the university announced on Sunday.
KSU Director of Athletics Milton Overton said Coach Bohannon informed him of his decision on Sunday morning.
"I want to express my sincere appreciation to Coach Bohannon and his family for their dedication to Kennesaw State University and our football program over the past 11 years," Overton said. "Coach Bohannon led Kennesaw State into the football era, poured his heart and soul into this program, and represented our university with the highest standards of professionalism and character."
However, Bohannon said this was not the case. In a Sunday evening statement on X, Bohannon said he was informed directly from Overton that he wanted to make a change in leadership.
"Contrary to what's been reported, I want to be clear that I did not step down from my position as head football coach at Kennesaw State University," Bohannon said. "Since we started the football program, I have had the pleasure of coaching and working alongside so many great people. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to this program."
In another statement on Monday, Overton clarified and said he had determined it was time to make a leadership change and take the football program in a new direction. He said he had advised Bohannon of his decision and offered him the opportunity to announce he had stepped down.
"Over the last three years, the results on the football field failed to support our goal of building a competitive FBS program," Overton said. "I advised Coach Bohannon of my decision and, as is customary, offered him the opportunity to announce that he had stepped down. At the conclusion of our meeting, it was my understanding that Coach Bohannon had accepted my offer."
During Bohannon's time with KSU, the university's football program quickly grew to national recognition. He led the Owls to become one of the most successful startup teams in FCS history within just five years, according to a release.
"His unwavering commitment to excellence helped lay the groundwork for KSU's transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision and its move this season to Conference USA," a release wrote.
The university said that Co-Offensive Coordinator Chandler Burks will assume the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Burks has been a foundation part of KSU's football program, was named the 2018 FCS National Performer of the Year, and was a runner-up for the Walter Payton Award. In addition, his dedication and achievements will be honored this year with his induction into the KSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Overton said that their focus continues to remain on their student-athletes. He added that Burks and the coaching staff are ready to support the team through the final three games of the season.
"We have two more home games this season (Nov. 16 and Nov. 23), and I am confident that Owl Nation will continue to rally around our team and show their support," Overton said.
A nationwide search will start immediately to find KSU's next head football coach, the university said.
