ATLANTA — Morehouse College made a big splash Friday afternoon by naming a former Atlanta Falcons star as its next head football coach.
The school announced that NFL veteran and former Falcons wide receiver Terance Mathis will now lead the football program.
Mathis played 13 seasons in the NFL, including eight of those with the Falcons (1994-1999) in which he eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in four of those years. Mathis was born in Detroit, Michigan, but went to Redan High School in Stone Mountain.
The former Falcon had two seasons with 11 receiving touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl in his first year with the team in 1994.
He played college football at the University of New Mexico before being drafted by the New York Jets in the sixth round of the 1990 NFL Draft.
In the announcement posted on social media, Morehouse called Mathis an "accomplished coach."
"Mathis brings a wealth of experience and a passion for the game that will undoubtedly inspire the team to new heights."
It's a big hire for the Maroon Tigers, who have gone 1-9 in each of the past two respective seasons. Mathis will look to reinvigorate the program and bring it back to prominence in the HBCU ranks.
