Atlanta Braves 2024 MLB draft picks | List, highlights

The Atlanta Braves made their first selection in the 2024 MLB Draft on Sunday night at No. 24.

ATLANTA — The 2024 Major League Baseball Draft kicked off Sunday night, with the Braves going a now-familiar route with their first pick at No. 24.

Atlanta tabbed a prep pitcher, Arizona left-hander Cam Caminiti for their first choice. Caminiti, follows on Owen Murphy and JR Ritchie who were taken with the Braves' first two picks in 2022.

The Braves later took another pitcher, Vanderbilt lefty Carter Holton, in the second round at No. 62.

The draft resumes Monday, and 11Alive will track Atlanta's picks below:

More on Cam Caminiti

The 6-foot-2 lefty has an easy, fluid motion that makes the most of his larger frame. If he grows another inch or two, you can see the easy physical comparison to current Braves star Max Fried.

According to the MLB Draft scouting report, he was considered one of the best players in the 2025 draft class before he reclassified to move up to 2024. He can run his fastball up to 98mph according to his profile, though he sits more consistently around 93-95 mph (quite a bit like, well, Max Fried).

He also reportedly has a curve, slider and changeup that are all in varying levels of development.

More on Carter Holton

A Georgia native who went to Benedictine HS in Savannah, Holton has big-time strikeout stuff -- with 251 in 200 innings across the last three seasons at Vanderbilt. MLB's scouting report says he can touch 98, like Caminiti, and also like Caminiti usually sits more at 93-95 mph.

"He misses more bats with a low-80s slider that features horizontal and vertical action and shuts down left-handers. His upper-70s curveball was a solid offering in the past before regressing in 2023, and he also owns a sinking mid-80s changeup," his scouting report states.

He's got a little more of a shotgun motion than Caminiti, and his college season ended in May with an arm injury that may have played a role in his ERA inflating to 5.19 before he was shut down. It's unclear how much of a concern it is that the injury may linger, or whether it will keep him from making his minor league debut this year.

In this video you can see the easy velocity on his fastball, as well as some really nasty swing-and-miss cut on his breaking pitches.
