FORT WORTH, Texas — The Atlanta Braves took an Arizona high school southpaw in the first round of the 2024 Major League Draft.
The team selected LHP Cam Caminiti from Saguaro High School with the No. 24 overall pick. According to the Braves, the 17-year-old went 9-0 with a 0.93 ERA and 119 strikeouts across 52.2 innings during his senior season. His contributions helped get his team to Arizona's 4A state championship.
The 6'2, 195-pound left-handed pitcher was named a First Team All-American by both Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association this year. The Scottsdale, Arizona native also garnered Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year honors for the 2023-24 campaign, a release said.
The Braves have taken pitchers in the first round in each of the last five drafts. According to a release, the club selected LHP Jared Shuster in 202, RHP Ryan Cusick in 2021 and RHP Hurston Waldrep in 2023 -- all collegiate hurlers -- while selecting prep right-hander Owen Murphy in 2022.
