HOUSTON — Coming off the heels of their road win over the Houston Astros, the Atlanta Braves have news of yet another injury on the roster.
The team announced Tuesday that three-time All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies would be placed on the 10-day injured list with a right "great toe fracture." Albies' injury came after the Braves said the Astro's Spencer Arrighetti hit Albies' toe while throwing an 81 mph curveball in the second inning of Monday's game at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Video from the game showed Albies brace for impact as the pitch approaches him, before the ball hits the front of his foot. He's seen jumping and falling to the ground in pain moments later.
On Tuesday, the Braves announced that infielder David Fletcher has been selected to play, but Braves fans were already lamenting Ozzie's injury.
Albies' injury comes just days after the team announced fellow All-Star pitcher Spencer Strider would be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 MLB season after undergoing elbow surgery to repair his UCL, or ulnar collateral ligament. Strider left the game against Arizona with elbow discomfort on April 5.
The Braves ended up besting the Astros 6-1 in the opening game of the three-game series. They play again Tuesday night in Houston, with the opening pitch at 8:10 p.m.
