Bryce Dejean-Jones, a 23-year-old NBA player, was found dead in Dallas Friday night, the Dallas County medical examiner confirmed to News 8.

Police said Dejean-Jones had allegedly kicked down the front door of an apartment on the 2500 block of Bennett Avenue around 3:20 a.m. A resident of the apartment, who was asleep at the time, woke up and grabbed a handgun and shot Dejean-Jones.

Dejean-Jones collapsed in the breezeway of the apartment complex, police said. He died after being taken to a local hospital.

Shams Charania, who reports for Yahoo! Sports’ The Vertical, said on Twitter that Dejean-Jones was shot in the abdomen.

Dejean-Jones was called up from the NBA Developmental League in January and signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans in February.

He played in 14 games with the Pelicans this season.

The Los Angeles native played college basketball at three universities, and finished his collegiate career at Iowa State of the Big 12 Conference.
