Atlanta Hawks to celebrate 'educational excellence' for annual HBCU night

ATLANTA — Atlanta Hawks announced plans for their annual HBCU night where they will celebrate the “educational excellence and unique culture” over 100 colleges.

The Hawks will play the Toronto Raptors at State Farm Arena where HBCU night will happen on Friday, Feb. 23 at  7:30 p.m. Chase will sponsor the event, according to a news release. 

“We come together to honor our nation’s and city’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities for their dedication to empowering the educational journeys of African American students,” said Hawks’ Executive Vice President and Chief People, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Camye Mackey. “HBCUs play a critical role in shaping the leadership capabilities of many of our employees and continuously contribute to the advancement of our entire community. 

Organizers said the night will kick off with the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s Gospel Choir, who will sing the United States and Canadian national anthems.  

Spelman College and Morehouse College official dance team and Clark Atlanta University’s dance line will join the Hawks’ dancers during halftime, officials said.

“We are thrilled to join forces with the Atlanta Hawks to celebrate the rich heritage and academic excellence of HBCUs,” said Brigitte Killings, Chase’s community and business development director.

A release added that the Hawks and Chase will also honor small business Nouveau Bar & Grill, which is owned by Ebony Austin, who is an HBCU alumna. 

According to the news release, fans will receive a complimentary towel and can buy limited-edition hoodies created by an Atlanta lifestyle brand. Those interested in scoring tickets to the event can click here to learn more.
