Hawks, State Farm Arena diverts millions in waste in 2023: How the team is going green

It comes after the home of the Hawks revealed that they diverted over 2 million pounds in waste in 2022.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena are celebrating a new milestone on Thursday after diverting over three million pounds of waste from landfills last year, according to a release from the team.

“We recognize that every action contributes to a more environmentally conscious and responsible future for our city and beyond and are so proud of accomplishing this new milestone within the sports and live entertainment industry," Hawks and State Farm Arena Head of Sustainability Sofi Armenakian said.

It comes after the home of the Hawks revealed that they diverted over 2 million pounds in waste in 2022.

According to a release, the arena became the first sports and live entertainment venue to receive TRUE Platinum certification in 2022.

Officials with the arena said that the latest totals include one million pounds of recycled material, one million pounds of food and organic material and more.

“We would like to thank everyone who has attended an event at State Farm Arena and our partners for their collaboration and support,” Armenakian added.

The release added that the arena has been able to divert 90% of all waste from landfills since the program's creation.
