Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott leaving for job at South Carolina

The former Gamecock offensive line coach who has been the head coach at Georgia State for the past seven seasons, is returning to USC as tight ends coach.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A familiar face is coming back to South Carolina and will join Shane Beamer's staff.

According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, Shawn Elliott is resigning as the head coach of Georgia State and will be named South Carolina's tight ends coach.

A Camden native, Elliott came to South Carolina in 2010 and was the offensive line coach and run game coordinator under Steve Spurrier. The 2015 seasons was marked by Spurrier's mid-season resignation and Elliott's promotion to interim head coach. He stayed on for the first year of the Will Muschamp era before taking over the program at Georgia State.

Elliott has compiled a 41-44 record in seven seasons in Atlanta, with four bowl victories with the Panthers.

Shawn Elliott statement - "It's extremely difficult to step away from the Georgia State football program, particularly the players and staff who have gone above and beyond. As hard as this decision is professionally, it's something that I must do personally. I want to thank Charlie Cobb for giving me this opportunity seven years ago and working tirelessly to collaborate on growing and improving Georgia State football. I am proud of this program's growth, our accomplishments and the foundation we laid for future success. I am especially proud of and grateful to all the players who have worked so hard to make this program successful. I know Charlie will hire a tremendous football coach to continue growing the program. With his leadership, GSU football is poised to do great things, and I know these young men will do just that. I will always be grateful that I was allowed to be a small part of the journey."

In December, Elliott led the Panthers to a win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, which capped off a 7-6 season for the 2023 season. That will be his final game for Georgia State which had kicked off spring practice earlier this week. But with Elliott stepping down, Georgia State has announced spring practice and the spring game have been postponed.

Elliott replaces Justin Stepp, who had been moved from wide receivers coach to tight ends coach but departed for Illinois last week to become the wide receivers coach for that program.
