Atlanta Falcons announce coordinators following new head coach hire

The two new hires come from the Los Angeles Rams.

ATLANTA — Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris' staff is quickly taking shape in Atlanta. 

The team announced Monday that Jimmy Lake has been hired as its new defensive coordinator. He comes to the team after a season of being the assistant head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.

Morris has pulled from the Rams to fill some key positions, including hiring Rams passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson as Atlanta's next offensive coordinator.

In a social media post, the Falcons displayed its lineup of coordinators. The team retained its Special Teams Coordinator, Marquice Williams.

Lake got his coaching start at his alma mater, Eastern Washington, coaching the secondary from 2000-2003. 

From there, he's worked on different coaching staffs on the collegiate level and in the NFL. During his time with the Rams, Lake helped the team bounce back from a 5-12 season in 2022 to post a 10-7 record, earning them a Wild Card playoff berth. 

He's a native of Walnut Creek, California. He's also lived in other places like Turkey and the Philippines, as his father served in the U.S. Air Force.

Robinson spent five seasons (2019-23) with the Rams, where he served in a variety of roles, including quarterbacks/passing game coordinator (2022-23), assistant quarterbacks coach (2019; 2021) and assistant wide receivers coach (2020). He started his NFL coaching career as assistant quarterbacks coach for the Rams in 2019.

Before his coaching days, Robinson was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round (250th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals during his football career. 

Robinson is a native of Littleton, Colorado.

The upcoming season will be Williams' fourth season with the Falcons as its special teams coordinator. 

According to the Falcons, his 2022 unit was one of two special teams units in the NFL to score multiple touchdowns during the season.

After the 2022 season, Williams represented Atlanta’s staff as the head coach of the East team at the 2023 East/West Shrine Game.
