LOS ANGELES — After months away from the team for an off-the-field personal matter, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett will return to the team for offseason workouts.
Rams general manager Les Snead told reporters Monday that Bennett would be back with the team after missing the entire 2023 season.
The former University of Georgia standout and two-time national champion stepped away from the team on Sept. 13 last year and was placed on the non-football injury list (NFI) by the Rams for an issue that head coach Sean McVay said was "bigger than" football. Bennett or the team have not disclosed the personal matter.
Back in January, McVay spoke with reporters and said that he thought Bennett was "doing better," but had no answer about whether Bennett would return or not. However, a little over two months later, we now know that Bennett will get to compete for the backup quarterback job with newly-signed QB Jimmy Garroppolo.
McVay spoke about Bennett once again on Tuesday. He told ESPN NFL Nation Rams reporter Sarah Barshop that despite not speaking to Bennett yet since it was announced he'd return, he said, "It sounds like he's doing well."
"Looking forward to getting him back and seeing how he's feeling. And we'll just take it a day at a time with him," McVay said.
Bennett made his first public appearance since he stepped away from the team back in November– when he accepted the Burlsworth Trophy when UGA played Ole Miss inside Sanford Stadium. The award is given to the nation’s most outstanding player who began his career as a walk-on.
While at Georgia, Bennett galvanized the Bulldogs in 2021 and brought a title back that had been missing for 41 years. His swagger and his play only elevated in 2022, earning him a trip to the Heisman Trophy ceremony and a second straight national title with UGA.
In the preseason a year ago for the Rams, Bennett was 36-62 for 347 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
