ATLANTA — With hotels filled nearly to capacity, the next option for many Super Bowl fans coming to Atlanta will be Airbnbs.
Atlanta officials said more than 1 million visitors are expected to come to the city for the festivities for the big game.
These guests provide locals the opportunity to make some cash for renting their homes, becoming an Airbnb host - some for the firs time.
The company said 23 percent of the hosts during the Super Bowl are doing so for the first time.
During Super Bowl week, Atlanta hosts are projected to earn $3.3 million in supplemental income, according to Airbnb. The typical host may earn about $690 during the week through the Airbnb platform.
As of Thursday, Airbnb said they have about 9,200 guests arriving in the Atlanta for the Super Bowl from 59 countries, 49 states, and 1,400 cities.
Prices for each location vary. In fact, recently a group who considers themselves a consumer watchdog, AirbnbWATCH, released a report claiming some AirBnb hosts in Altanta are price gouging for the Super Bowl.
However, Airbnb denied the gouging claim saying "when demand for Airbnb increases, supply also tends to increase."
Some of the prices range from $40 a night to $8,000. Even though the prices might not be ones visitors want to see, it's a chance for local residents to cash in.
