Atlanta area restaurants, bars feel economic impact of Super Bowl

Many people ordered food or went out to watch the Super Bowl, and some businesses cashed in.

ATLANTA — As fans across metro Atlanta and around the country geared up to enjoy the Super Bowl on Sunday night, many local restaurants had been working behind the scenes to get game-ready.

“We got Philly cheese steak. We got wings, fries and a drink," beamed Estefani Flores of Urban Wings.

Flores manages the location on Piedmont Avenue in northwest Atlanta.

She said she’d been working to make sure her store could fill all the orders they were expecting on Sunday.

“We’ve been preparing the whole week. We’ve got extra chicken. We got extra everything. We got a lot. Yesterday, we worked hard doing all the stuff for today so that we can be ready," Flores said.

Being ready is key for many businesses that stand to make a lot of money when consumers buy food or choose to watch the game at a bar.

Woof’s Sports Bar in Midtown expected to have at least 250 people come out to watch the game.

“Our kitchen gets really busy on the weekends, well during the week too, so I’m sure they’ve ordered extra everything. Our liquor is a little fuller than usual, too (chuckles) because we’re expected to be pretty busy this weekend," said bartender John Clayton.

Clayton has been working as a bartender at Woof’s for 21 years and this will be his 22nd Super Bowl there.

He said the place probably wouldn't fill up until 3 p.m. but he’s planning to clock out soon after.

“Well, fortunately, I get off at 5 o’clock, so I hopefully get to sit on this side of the bar for the rest of the madness. I’d actually rather watch the Super Bowl and the commercials and the half-time than to be working behind the bar," said Clayton.

Both Urban Wings and Woof’s say chicken wings are the most popular food ordered during the big game.

Clayton added that the most popular drinks are draft beers, margaritas and Bloody Mary’s.
