COBB COUNTY, Ga. — We've been talking about it for months, but the time has finally come. Super Bowl Sunday is just 9 days away.
Travelers are set to roll in as early as next week for some of the festivities surrounding the big game.
A lot of attention has been on the travelers that will fly in and out of world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, but Cobb County officials said they are expecting crowds at Cobb County International Airport as well, which is also known as McCollum Field.
"This is a great opportunity for Cobb County as we bring in guests and visitors from all over the country," said Cobb County Airport Director Karl Von Hagel.
County officials said more than 200 jets are expected to fly into Cobb's airport, increasing traffic by more than 700 percent during a five-day period.
"This will be the busiest weekend in the history of the airport," Von Hagel said.
"At our peak times, we will have aircrafts taking off or landing every two and a half minutes in and out of the airport."
A new welcome banner has been placed at the airport to welcome guests at the visitors terminal. There will also be a hospitality suite set up at the airport.
Its website said there are over 350 aircraft based at McCollum, most of them being single-engine. But county officials said says the match up between Los Angeles and New England means larger jets will be flying into the airport.
"We are going to be seeing larger cabin aircraft coming in which is really going to tax our parking plan as we try to fit these larger type of aircraft that can go transcontinental into as many spaces as we can get, he said "It's going to be a challenge. It's going to be a lot of game day decisions on our part."
