ATLANTA — It's the signature architectural feature of the most expensive building in Georgia.
But less than a week before the big game, it's not clear if the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be open or closed.
"We love the idea of being able to show off the technology of the roof that exists here at Mercedes-Benz Stadium," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday.
Goodell says the NFL is still monitoring forecasts ahead of the game. It's not clear when the decision will be made.
11Alive took a tour of MBS with Steve Cannon, the CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment, to find out which option is better.
"The air quality will feel different, fresher and crisper (with an open roof) against that night sky, to see that halo board lit up, that contrast is just amazing," Cannon explained. "I really do hope that it's open."
The roof can be opened and closed in less than 20 minutes. However, it's highly unlikely that would happen during the actual game.
"At night, this building looks absolutely spectacular," Cannon said. "Either way, it's gonna be a phenomenal fan experience."
The coldest Super Bowl ever played outdoors was Super Bowl VI in New Orleans at Tulane Stadium. The high that day was 43 degrees. That's much lower than the forecast high for Sunday.
