Here's how Coco Gauff did at the Paris Olympics today

She was in action against Argentina's Maria Lourdes Carlé.

PARIS, France — Coco Gauff breezed through her second round match Monday at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Gauff, who grew up partly in Atlanta, was up against Maria Lourdes Carlé of Argentina. Carlé played one season at the University of Georgia, and both she and Gauff are among the athletes with Georgia ties we've been tracking in Paris.

Gauff, 20, won the meeting with Carlé without much difficulty in straight sets -- 6-1, 6-1.

She will now advance to the third round for a matchup with Donna Vekić of Croatia, the 13th-seeded player in the women's Olympic tennis tournament.

Gauff, appearing at her first Olympics, is the tournament's No. 2 seed.

More on Coco Gauff

Gauff is one of the brightest stars in tennis -- and she was recognized as such in being named a Team USA flag bearer for the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The 20-year-old is the reigning U.S. Open champion and reached the semifinals this year at both the Australian Open and French Open. She heads to Paris as the No. 2 ranked player in the world.

Eubanks is a longtime friend of Gauff and her family, and he said in a statement he was "incredibly proud of Coco" after she was chosen as a flag bearer.

"I know how great she is as a tennis player, but more importantly, how great she is as a person,” Eubanks said. "I don’t think there is anyone more deserving of this honor and I’m excited to see her carry the flag as she leads our U.S. delegation in the opening ceremony."

Gauff's father is a former basketball player for Georgia State, and she spent her younger childhood growing up in Atlanta before the family moved to Florida.
