PARIS, France — Three Georgia athletes from the metro Atlanta area competed in the Women's soccer final Saturday in Paris.

Emily Sonnett, Jane Campbell, and Croix Bethune all played alongside the United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) on Aug. 10.

The U.S. team won the gold medal after beating Brazil 1-0. The win marked the team's first Olympic gold medal since 2012.

Sonnett, of Marietta, is a longtime staple of the team and plays as a defender. Campbell, of Kennesaw, is an alternate goalkeeper for the USWNT. Bethune, who is from Alpharetta and a UGA alum, is an alternate midfielder.

Here's how the three Georgians did in the match

The team closed out an undefeated run to the title in their first international campaign under new coach Emma Hayes.

The game lasted for 102 minutes, with 12 minutes of extra time added to the 90-minute clock. The extra time added tension in the last few minutes of the game, as an exhausted U.S. team nearly allowed several goals as Brazil rallied to control the ball for most of the extra time.

But even that wasn't enough for Brazil to break through Team USA's defense, ending the game without the South American team scoring a goal.

The teams have faced each other twice before in Olympic gold-medal games. The U.S. won both times — 2-1 in Athens in 2004 and 1-0 at the 2008 Beijing Games.
