SANTIAGO, Chile — Two Georgians left their marks over the weekend at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile less than a year out from the Paris Olympics.
Marietta Olympian Daniel Haugh, who also competed at the Tokyo Games in 2021, won a silver medal in the hammer throw in Santiago. Haugh, a former Kennesaw State athlete, recorded a long throw of 77.65 meters, a little more than three meters shy of gold medal winner Ethan Katzberg of Canada.
Another former KSU athlete, Jordan Gray, took home bronze in the heptathlon - an event that combines scores from seven sub-events including the 800 meter race, javelin throw, long jump, 100-meter hurdles, shot put, 200-meter race and high jump.
The Ball Ground, Ga. native is currently an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
For both athletes, the medals in Santiago are their first at a major international competition.
The Pan American Games, like the Olympics, is held every four years and brings together competitors from across the Western Hemisphere to compete in Olympic athletic events, serving as an important proving ground ahead of the Olympics themselves.
The 2023 Pan American Games in Chile began Oct. 20 and concluded Sunday.
