Anthony Edwards poised to be USA Basketball's breakout star at Paris Olympics

PARIS, France — Looking to cheer on some Georgia-tied Olympic athletes on Friday? Check out the Peach State representation on Saturday, Aug. 3!

3x3 Basketball

  • Rhyne Howard
    • Plays for WNBA Atlanta Dream
    • Matchup: US v China, women's pool round
    • Time: 1:05 p.m.
  • Dearica Hamby
    • From Marietta, went to Norcross High School
    • Matchup: US v China, women's pool round
    • Time: 1:05 p.m.

Results: Team USA beat China, winning 21-13. They will advance to the semifinals.

Basketball

  • Anthony Edwards
    • Atlanta native, attended Therrell High School, Holy Spirit Prep and UGA
    • Matchup: US v Puerto Rico, men's group phase group C
    • Time: 11:15 a.m.

    • Georgia Tech alumnus

Results: The men's basketball team is advancing to the knockout rounds. Team USA finished its game with Puerto Rico on Saturday, winning 104-83. Atlanta's Anthony Edwards was the star of the game, scoring 26 points. 

Golf

  • Sepp Straka
    • UGA graduate
    • Matchup: Men's individual stroke play round 3; competing for Austria
    • Time: 3 a.m.

Results: Straka plays for Austria he ranked 34 in Round 3 of the Men's Individual stroke. He will advance to the final round on Sunday. 

Swimming

  • Nic Fink
    • UGA and Georgia Tech graduate
    • Matchup: Mixed 4x100m swimming medley relay, qualifying heats and finals
    • Time: 6:40 a.m., 3:58 p.m.

Results: Team USA took home a gold medal and beat the world record with a new fast time. 

Shooting

  • Katelyn Abeln
    • From Douglasville
    • Matchup: 25m pistol women's final
    • Time: 3:30 a.m.

Results: Abeln placed last, 8th place in the final. Gold went to Yang Jinn of South Korea, Silver to France's Camille Jedrzejewski, and Bronze to Veronika Major of Hungary. 

  • Vincent Hancock
    • From Eatonton 
    • Matchup: skeet men's qualification day 2; skeet men's final
    • Time: 3 a.m.; 9:30 a.m.

Results: Hancock, joining historic athletes, took home Georgia's first gold medal and his fourth straight gold medal in his event in the Men's skeet shooting final

Soccer

  • Emily Sonnett

    • Matchup: US v Japan, women's quarterfinal
    • Time: 9 a.m.
  • Jane Campbell
    • From Kennesaw, attended Darlington School
    • Matchup: US v Japan, women's quarterfinal

  • Croix Bethune
    • From Alpharetta, was an All-American at UGA
    • Matchup: US v Japan, women's quarterfinal
    • Time: 9 a.m.

Results: The U.S. women's soccer team scored a goal during extra time play, allowing the U.S. to advance to the semi-final on Tuesday. It took 105 minutes of gameplay for the win.

Track and field

  • Jasmine Moore
    • Was at UGA for two seasons before transferring
    • Matchup: women's triple jump final
    • Time: 2:20 p.m.

Results: Former University of Georgia track athlete Jasmine Moore won bronze in the women's triple jump on a wet track. She placed third. 

  • Keturah Orji
    • UGA graduate
    • Matchup: women's triple jump final
    • Time: 2:20 p.m.

Results: Orji finished ninth in the women's triple jump event without medaling. 

  • Cejhae Greene
    • UGA graduate
    • Matchup: men's 100m preliminary round; men's 100m round 1 (if qualify), competing for Antigua and Barbuda
    • Time: 4:35 a.m., 5:55 a.m.

Results: Greene finished fourth in his heat and 30th overall. He will not be advancing to the semifinal. 

  • Janek Oiglane
    • UGA assistant track and field coach
    • Matchup: men's decathlon 110m hurdles, discus throw (groups to be determined), pole vault, javelin throw (groups to be determined), 1500m; competing for Estonia
    • Time: 4:05 a.m., 4:55 a.m./6:05 a.m., 7:40 a.m., 1:10/2:10 p.m., 3:45 p.m.

Results: Oiglane, who is competing for Estonia, ranked 14th in the 110m hurdles, even though he ranked second in his heat with 14.45 seconds, his season best. In the discus throw, he ranked 16th with 43.39m, his season best. In the pole vault, he reached his personal best and ranked first overall with 5.30 as his result. In the javelin throw, he ranked second overall with a 71.89m result as his season best. In the 1500m, he ranked sixth overall and reached his season best with a 4:25.59 result. He did not medal in this event.

  • Johannes Erm
    • UGA graduate
    • Matchup: men's decathlon 110m hurdles, discus throw (groups to be determined), pole vault, javelin throw (groups to be determined), 1500m; competing for Estonia
    • Time: 4:05 a.m., 4:55 a.m./6:05 a.m., 7:40 a.m., 1:10/2:10 p.m., 3:45 p.m.

Results: Erm placed 12th in the 110m hurdles with a 14.35 seconds result. He then placed ninth overall, reaching his season best with a result of 46.29 in the discus throw. Erm placed 17th overall with a 4.60 result in pole vault. He placed 11th overall in javelin throw with a 59.58 result. Erm placed fourth overall in the 1500m reaching his personal best, but did not medal. 

  • Karel Tilga
    • National decathlon champion while at UGA
    • Matchup: men's decathlon 110m hurdles, discus throw (groups to be determined), pole vault, javelin throw (groups to be determined), 1500m; competing for Estonia
    • Time: 4:05 a.m., 4:55 a.m./6:05 a.m., 7:40 a.m., 1:10/2:10 p.m., 3:45 p.m.

Results: Tilga finished 18th overall in the 110m hurdles with a 14.66-second result, reaching his season best. He then placed No. 3 overall in the discus throw with a result of 5.13, reaching his seasonal best. In the pole vault, Tilga finished 14th overall with a 4.70 season-best result. In the javelin throw,  he finished seventh overall. In the 1500m, he did not medal but ranked seventh with a 4:26.41 result.
