PARIS, France — The Olympics is known for dramatic finishes and amazing upsets and that's exactly what spectators got in the finish to the 4x400-meter mixed team relay race.
Just one day after Americans Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon and Kaylyn Brown broke their own world record in the event, they were back on the track seeking a gold medal.
The Americans were tied for the lead with Belgium when third-leg Deadmon handed off to Brown for the anchor lap, but Brown could not hold off Dutch runner Femke Bol in the back straightaway, who came from behind in fourth to pass Brown up in the final stretch and claim the top spot.
Watch the dramatic final moments below:
Bol, whose best race is the 400 hurdles, ran her final lap in 47.93 seconds, and the Netherlands won the race and gold in 3 minutes, 7.43 seconds — .31 clear of the United States.
The U.S. claimed the silver medal, with Great Britain landing in the third spot for bronze.
Stunning.
Bol pulled a similar stunt last year at world championships in the women’s 4x400, rallying from well behind late to earn a gold medal. That came after she tripped and fell in the home stretch of the mixed relay, where she was making up ground on the U.S.
