The spirit of the Olympic games lives on despite one man's effort to extinguish them. Literally.

As the Olympic flame was being carried through Joinville, Brazil, a protester charged the runner carrying the torch with a fire extinguisher.

The protester never had a chance.

Instantly, one of the guards surrounding the runner held the protestor back. He still got some of the extinguisher released, but it was not nearly enough to affect the flame.

It wouldn't really have mattered if the protester was successful. There have been many attempts to extinguish the flame. That is why multiple flames from the same source are made and kept in backup locations.

So no matter what, the Olympic flame will burn bright over Rio de Janeiro this summer.
